El presente volumen trata sobre el Hain, la ceremonia de iniciación de los selk’nam. En medio del territorio aislado, frío e inhóspito de Tierra del Fuego, distintos grupos selk’nam convergían para realizar la ceremonia y construían en un espacio abierto la gran choza o hain, a la cual serían llevados los jóvenes adolescentes y desde donde surgirían del fuego dos de los espíritus más temidos. Seres de apariencia sobrenatural, con sus cuerpos desnudos pintados y vistosas máscaras cubriendo sus rostros, emergían de la gran choza o del bosque —simbolizando el cielo— y asombraban a mujeres y niños con sus apariciones. Eran representados secretamente por los hombres, y sólo a los jóvenes iniciados se les revelaba su verdadera identidad durante el intenso entrenamiento físico y espiritual en el que aprendían de sus mayores las tradiciones de su pueblo.
Esta obra relata e interpreta el Hain de 1923, celebrado en un tiempo en que los selk’nam ya se encontraban casi extintos, y documentado con sorprendentes fotografías por el religioso y antropólogo Martin Gusinde.
This volume is about Hain, the initiation ceremony of the selk’nam. In the middle of the isolated, cold and inhospitable territory of Tierra del Fuego, different selk’nam groups converged to celebrate the ceremony and constructed in an open space the great hut or hain, in which would emerge from the fire two of the most fearful spirits and where the young adolescents would be carried. Beings of a supernatural appearance, with their naked and painted bodies, and also eye-catching masks covering their faces, emerged from the great hut or from the forest —symbolizing the sky— and they astonished women and children with their apparitions. They were represented secretly by men and they only revealed their real identity to the initiated adolescents during the hard physical and spiritual training where they learnt the traditions from the older men.
This exemplar narrates and interprets the Hain in 1923, celebrated when the selk’nam were almost extinct, and documented with amazing photographs by the religious and anthropologist Martin Gusinde.
